Fall 2019 EVENT

Fall 2019 brought revenue cycle leaders from across the country to Denver, Colorado, to tackle the challenge of Cost and Patient Engagement.

RCM Leaders Forum Founder and moderator Ben Reigle officially started the event with a thought-provoking presentation on expectations and how we hold ourselves responsible for things that are out of our control. Part ego and part limiting belief, it was a clear call out for engagement and a rallying cry for our leaders to participate at a high level: the Leaders Forum experience is based on authenticity and getting real about what is going on in your Revenue Cycle.

Ben’s introduction prepared the group for our first expert panel on Labor and Non-Labor Cost. Facilitated by Ryan O’Hara from Northern Arizona Health, the panel included: David Endicott (former CTO Providence St. Joseph), Nik Alexiades (CFO, RWJ Barnabas), April Langford (Founder, RevCycle Match), and Rich Felbinger (Former CFO, Borgess Health). The combination of experts from inside and outside healthcare brought to light new options for our leaders to consider.

After a quick lunch, our group reconvened to discuss their current challenges around cost and were challenged to come up with creative solutions they had not previously considered. Individual groups brainstormed on new approaches and strategies to tackle this ongoing struggle.

We finished off the afternoon with two showcase options: CFO ‘Must-Haves’ for Cost Justification, designed to address what CFOs need for justifying cost and essential for trust, led by Rick Felbinger and Nik Alexiades; or Negotiating the Right Contract with David Endicott and April Langford, focused on techniques for negotiating the terms and creating a lasting value in contracts.

Tuesday kicked off with an exciting Keynote address from the CEO of VAL Health, Karen Horgan. Karen is making waves in healthcare by introducing behavioral economics into the conversation about Patient Engagement. Karen shared the information that while patients might not be entirely rational, their decisions tend to be predictable. She discussed how healthcare systems could harness this knowledge to create behavioral economics solutions to encourage consumers, patients, members, providers, and other stakeholders to become more engaged in and proactive about their health.

Our final expert panel tackled best practices for Patient Engagement, taking input from our leaders on what is working and what is not in their system. The panel, facilitated by Janel Harmon (VP, RCM, US Medical), featured Dr. Frannie Kronenberg (Partners Health), Rob Rush (United Healthcare), Christy Calhoun (Healthwise) and Heather Dunn (Vanderbilt University Medical Center). The lead-in talk from Karen Horgan ignited the group to come up with new options for persuading healthcare professionals and patients to take part in pioneering new pathways to success.
